OIA Bible Study Checklist

This checklist is designed to guide you through the OIA Inductive Bible Study Method - Observation, Interpretation, Application. Based largely on Peter Krol's Knowable Word, it provides a simple, structured approach to studying the Bible and applying its truth.

🙏 Pre-Study Prayer

Pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance to understand and apply the passage. Ask God to reveal His will and character through the text.

📖 Read the Passage

🔍 Observation: What does the passage say?

Check all

Who is speaking? Who is this about? What do you notice about the words, grammar, structure, genre, mood? (Consider repeated words, comparison and contrast, characters, connectors, key terms/concepts) When do the events occur? Where does this happen? Why is this being said? How does it happen? How is it illustrated? What other questions arise from the passage or from you? (Ask questions about your observations) Summarize: What does the passage say?

💭 Interpretation: What does the passage mean?

Check all

What does the passage mean? Why does the writer (secondary author) say this? Why does God (primary author) say this? What does this passage reveal about the character of God and His glory? Consider how this passage connects to doctrinal truths, theological themes, God's promises or commands, and the overall narrative of redemption in Scripture. Answer your questions that arose during observation. Summarize: What is the main point of this passage?

Check all

How does this passage apply to my life? Consider how this applies inwardly and outwardly to your head, hands and heart. Consider how this passage reveals my heart, points to my need for grace and dependence on Christ, drives me to pray, encourages me to trust in God's promises, leads me to worship, and compels me to share the truth with others. What specific actions or behaviors do I need to start or stop? Summarize: So how should I change my life in light of this passage?
